Abstract :: Kim Sterelny opposes the view that epistemic artefacts
explain how agents with dumb brains can nonetheless be smart. In
evolutionary history, he argues, only smart brains could reap the
benefits of epistemic technologies, for these require sophisticated
learning mechanisms as well as mechanisms to detect and counter the
epistemic pollution of others. I argue, however, that the real
cognitive innovation was not epistemic tool use, but tool use simpliciter ; once that innovation was in place, brains could afford to remain as dumb (or smart) as they were. (more soon)
- Information and the state of nature.
I try to improve Edward Craig's functional role analysis of the concept
of knowledge (in E. Craig, "Knowledge and the state of nature", 1990,
OUP) by adding a set of parameters drawn from information theory. (more soon)
- Untitled #1
(with Wybo Houkes). The paper will concern models used in evolutionary
archaeology and evolutionary economics. We will assess their
explanatory value with regard to technological innovation and
differentiation. (more soon)
- Untitled #2 (with
Martin Peterson). Martin and I are conducting a philosophical experiment
to test intuitions regarding knowing and knowldedge.
- Untitled #3 (with
Marieke van Holland, or rather the reverse). Marieke (and I) are
examining how etiological function theories fare with regard to hybrid
functions (i.e. functions performed by systems comprising both biological
and artefactual components). (more soon)
